The Hidden Harmony. Heraclitus: 'The hidden harmony is better than the obvious. Opposition brings concord. Out of discord comes the fairest harmony.' The hidden harmony: opposites are not enemies—they complement. The hidden harmony is in the tension between opposites, not in eliminating one side. The obvious harmony is the mind's; the hidden is the sage's.

Fast Asleep Even While Awake. 'Man is fast asleep even while awake.' Fast asleep even while awake: the ordinary consciousness is sleep. Walking, talking, working—all in sleep. The sage is awake in the midst of sleep. Awakening is not adding consciousness—it's waking up from the dream you call life.

Wisdom is One and Unique

Wisdom is One and Unique. 'Wisdom is one and unique: it is unwilling and yet willing to be called by the name of Zeus.' Wisdom is one and unique: not many wisdoms but one. It's unwilling to be named because naming limits it. Yet it's willing—because even names point to it. The nameless accepts all names without being any of them.

God is Day and Night

God is Day and Night. 'God is day and night, winter and summer, war and peace, satiety and hunger.' God is day and night: God is not one side of duality—God IS duality. Don't choose day over night—both are God. The sage embraces both. Harmony is in seeing the whole, not in choosing one half.

Such is the Depth of its Meaning. 'Let us not make arbitrary conjectures about the greatest matters. Much learning does not teach understanding. Seekers after gold dig up much earth and find little.' Such is the depth: the greatest truths can't be conjectured about. Learning accumulates earth; understanding finds the gold. Dig less—see more. The depth is not in quantity but in penetration.

Here, Too, Are the Gods. 'The gods are here, too, not just in the highest.' Here, too, are the gods: the divine is not above but here. In the marketplace, in the kitchen, in the gutter. Don't look up—look here. The hidden harmony is in the ordinary, not in the extraordinary.

A Dry Soul is Wisest and Best. 'A dry soul is wisest and best; a moist soul is the downfall.' A dry soul is wisest: not dried up but free from the moisture of desires. The moist soul is dissipated—leaking through many desires. The dry soul is concentrated—whole, unified. Don't dissipate—concentrate.

Man is Not Rational. 'Man is not rational—animals are.' Man is not rational: man thinks he's rational but he's not—he rationalizes. The animal is truly rational—it follows nature. Man goes against nature and calls it reason. The hidden harmony: true reason is beyond the mind's reasoning.

The Sun is New Each Day. 'The sun is new each day.' The sun is new each day: existence is eternally fresh. The mind makes it old through memory. See without memory and everything is new. The sun you saw yesterday is not today's sun—today's is fresh, now, alive.

Nature Loves to Hide

Nature Loves to Hide. 'Nature loves to hide. Unless you expect the unexpected, you will never find truth.' Nature loves to hide: truth doesn't advertise—it hides. The seeker must expect the unexpected. Don't look where you expect—look where you don't. The hidden harmony is found by the one who seeks without seeking.

You Cannot Step Twice into the Same River

You Cannot Step Twice into the Same River. 'You cannot step twice into the same river—other waters are flowing.' You cannot step twice into the same river: everything flows. The 'same' river is already different. The 'same' you is already different. Don't cling to what was—flow with what is. The hidden harmony: the only constant is change.
